Your Step-By-Step Guide

welcome to the bowmen of melville

Bowmen of Melville is a family-friendly and socially-oriented club.  We are affiliated with Archery Australia and are always welcoming new members. Our members range from learners to (before-they-were-famous) Olympians – archery can be a competitive sport, but it can also be a very sociable sport that includes every level of participation.

Archery knows no boundaries. It is suitable for everyone: young or old, male or female, disabled or able bodied.

Whatever bow style you shoot (recurve, compound, longbow, or spreading your enthusiasm across several divisions), you will find a niche that fits you in this club.

We run Come and Try sessions most Saturday mornings, see here for more details.

There is a club shoot every Saturday afternoon as well as Tuesday evenings Twilight Shoots, see our Shooting Calendar.

Traditional Archery

A strong community of Traditional archers
Newcomers find endless reasons to love traditional archery. Atop that list is the pure fun and satisfaction of shooting a simple bow steeped in history. You’ll be amazed at the accuracy you’ll achieve with traditional bows’ simple designs. Like all bows, they feature two limbs, one string and a riser, but unlike modern bows they have no wheels, cables, sights or other gadgetry. It’s all up to the archer to make great shots, which is the fun and challenge of traditional archery.

Olympic Recurve

For all ages and levels

The unqualified phrase “recurve bow” or just “a recurve” in modern archery circles usually refers to a typical modern recurve bow, as used by archers in the Olympics and many other competitive events. It employs advanced technologies and materials.
Barebow is another type of modern recurve bow. It usually uses the same riser and limbs as a recurve, but lacks a sight, stabilizers, and clicker. While they may still look similar, it is tuned differently with a negative tiller and a different weight distribution. This is due to the archer’s anchor point being on the corner of the mouth instead of below the chin.

Compound Archery

The Formula 1 of archery
In modern archery, a compound bow is a bow that uses a levering system, usually of cables and pulleys, to bend the limbs.
Compound bows are typically constructed of man-made materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber, while traditional bows and warbows usually are entirely or partially made of wood or bamboo.
The higher-rigidity, more advanced construction also improves accuracy by reducing the bow’s sensitivity to changes in temperature and humidity.
